Jesus Calling: 365 Devotions for Kids
Jesus Calling was originally a devotional book written for adults to experience God’s presence in their everyday aspects of life. Literally an unknown writer at the time, Sarah Young published this devotional as a mean of sharing her own experiences of how God might have been speaking to her in all things. She imagined the gentleness with which Christ would respond to her comings and going. And in all things, big and small Young found herself herself being ministered to by the voice of Christ.
It is safe to say that this approach to prayer has deeply resonated with a few others, having sold over 10 million copies. Now, since its original publication it has since been adapted and reshaped for a younger generation of pray-ers. In Jesus Calling: 365 Devotions for Kids, each day focuses on an aspect of a child’s life. With life aspects like, worry, choices, rest, etc Sarah Young imagines what the voice of God would say to children in those regards.
These devotions are short, relevant to a child’s heart and backed up with scripture. In a world where kids are hungry for voices of life-giving truth, these pages of small breaths of fresh air to keep them attuned to Christ’s calling on their lives. Using anxiety as one example, here’s a taste of how Young would imagine God’s voice speaking to that child who is worn down:
“Just as your body gets tired, so does your spirit. Trying to do the right thing can really wear you out sometimes, especially if everyone around you is doing what’s wrong. Sometimes you just need a break.
…
Come to Me. Lift your hands in prayer to Me. Lie back and rest in My Presence. Take a deep breath of My Peace. I will refresh you and give you the strength to keep going”.
(Matthew 11:29; 1 Timothy 2:8)
Best suited for older kids (6-12), this is a great tool for parents and small group leaders as they invite their children to experience Christ closely in their everyday life.
We read this EVERY morning before heading off to school and work. The girls remind me if I forget – we have even read it standing at the door in our jackets. It is simply GREAT and CONNECTS with my kids (and me!).
Thank you for sharing Melody!
