The Mother and Son Prayer Journal by Canadian author Christie Thomas is a wonderful keepsake devotional. It provides touchpoint devotionals for moms and sons to be in the Word together and share how they are seeing and understanding God.  It is really well suited for boys who are aged 5 to 11 years. 

The 52 devotions each begin with a chat question about the topic.  It then dives into a short – about a page-long – devotional.  Then, and this is really cool, there is a space in the book for your son to write or draw a response.  This response might be a freestyle drawing, completing a comic, graphic or something written.   Mom also has a space to write her prayer for her child that day.   

The daily topics have a great variety, ranging from “how-to’s” (like with prayer or trusting God) to character (like patience and obedience) to challenging real-life faith moments (like when life is unfair and finding strength in God).  Each devotion has easy language for kids to understand, and questions that really dig into every day faith living.  

Do your boys wiggle a lot? Hard to keep still?  The Mother and Son Prayer Journal embraces wiggly boys, even including a devotional called “Praying with your body.” 

Ellen, a mom at Mimico Baptist Church enjoyed this book with her son, William, age 7.  Ellen said that she and William loved answering the questions verbally with each other.  Ellen really liked writing her prayers for Willian. She also shares, “I would definitely recommend this book to others because of many reasons. Firstly, there are various topics in each unit. You can skip units and choose your favorite units instead of having to read from the beginning to the end. Secondly, the length is perfect for my 7-year-old son. Thirdly, the questions are amazing. Mother and son both need to think deeply. Last but not the least, high quality family time.” 

What a fantastic keepsake to look back on – how you and your son grew in faith together. The book has a lovely hard cover that will preserve these memories for years.
