Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Discussion Guide

Sonic the Hedgehog is based on the Sega video game character and it is a laugh out loud action adventure for kids! It is a fun movie to watch with a lot of very positive messages throughout. Overall it focuses on the importance of companionship, whether that is friendship or family. There are so many great topics of conversation in this movie. While there is some violence and danger, it is done in a very ‘cartoon’ like and unrealistic way making it a great movie for all ages.

Which of the characters did you like best? Why?

What feelings did you experience in this movie?

Discuss lonliness. Sonic ends up on earth for his own protection but he is warned not to let anyone see him which makes for a lonely life for him. Have you ever felt lonely or been left out of anything? Do you ever notice other people who seem to be left out? Why is it important to be included?

Discuss bullying. Dr. Robotnik shares about ways he was bullied as a child throughout the movie. Do you think he is a bully? In what ways does he bully people? Do you ever feel bullied or see others bullied? What should we do when that happens?

Discuss bucket lists. Sonic learns about ‘bucket lists’ and creates one when he thinks he has to leave earth. What things would you put on your bucket list? If we created a family bucket list what should we put on it?

Tom shares about wanting to do something important and really matter to people and he thinks that will happen by moving somewhere else. How does his thinking change by the end of the movie? What does he discover about what is important in life? What do you want your life to be about?

Other themes to discuss: grief and loss, friendship, family, helping others.
